Wrexham side routs team of former USWNT players 12-0 at TST

A Wrexham team featuring former, current and guest players beat a U.S. Women side of ex-internationals 12-0 at The Soccer Tournament (TST).

Wrexham, whose team at the tournament is managed by men’s first team coach David Jones, scored seven goals in the opening 20 minutes to knock their opponents out of the competition.

Former striker Lee Trundle, who played for Wrexham’s between 2001-2003, netted four goals to seal a comfortable victory for his side.

Trundle, 46, said: “I think it’s great especially to be involved in a tournament like this and for myself to get back with some old ex-teammates and get out on the pitch.

“The setup, the way they’ve done the tournament and the concept of it as well where you have to score that winning goal, we’ve seen today the best of that.”

Goalkeeper Mark Howard said of the support: “The growth of the club, especially out here, is massive.

“That’s one of the reasons why as a current player I volunteered myself. I wanted to embrace what we’ve got going on now. It’s enjoyable. It’s amazing to come out and see the fans. You expect a little bit but you don’t know how much you’ll get because you’re not used to that exposure.

“Obviously we’re lower-level English tiers, so to come out here and we’re treated like the top Premier League teams, it’s an amazing feeling. The American supporters are so positive. The tournament’s amazing. We’re really enjoying our time.”

The U.S. team featured former USWNT players including Heather O’Reilly, Cat Whitehill and Lori Lindsey, and was coached by USWNT legend Mia Hamm.

Wrexham took 39 shots to their opponents’ five without reward but speaking after the game, O’Reilly told NBC Sports Soccer: “We’re super proud. Hopefully we’ve proved to anybody, just go for it, just live. What’s the worst that could happen? We lose 16-0 to Wrexham?

“We don’t care because we’re living, we’re being bold and we’re being brave. Here we have two amazing products that American soccer fans are getting behind. It’s just a ton of fun and it’s brought all of us together.”

The TST, a seven-a-side tournament featuring current, former and guest players is taking place in North Carolina between 1-4 June, with a winner-takes-all prize pot of $1million (£807,000).

Premier League teams West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers, plus Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund, are some of the clubs to have entered.

The format of the tournament sees eight groups of four compete, with the top two from each group progressing to the knockout stage.
