Amachete wielding crook received the shock of his life after unwittingly trying to rob a former MMA star. Javier Baez was approached by the thief - now identified as Omar Marrero - while he was sitting in his car in an LA parking lot around 4am on the night of Halloween.
Marrero smashed one of his car windows in what seemingly was an attempt to steal his car and attempted to cut the ex-fighter with the huge blade. As Baez recounted to CBS, he tried to calm the attacker down, but was forced to act when he refused to back down.
"He tapped on my door window. I told him to leave me alone, and then he came at me with a knife. I told him to leave me alone. I'm calling the cops. I hope he doesn't break my window. That's all I cared about," explained Baez.
What happened next was an epic display of self-defense. As Marrero charged at Baez, he managed to sidestep the blade before picking up the man and smashing him to the floor. Baez executed the move to absolute perfection and recognized to Local News10 that his MMA training really helped.
"When you train so many times, it becomes just a reflex. Once it came to that, it's all instincts," he explained. "I couldn't do much but just react. I've been training my whole life - black belt jiu-jitsu, wrestled in college, I've got eight pro fights, MMA masters. I've got great training partners," he said.
Despite abandoning the Octagon back in 2018, it's clear he's still got it. In his professional career, he had a record of 5-2-1. Assault and aggravated battery are some of the serious charges Marrero is now facing.
