Karola Ruth Westheimer better known as Dr. Ruth, is a German-American sex therapist, talk show host, author, professor, Holocaust survivor, and former Haganah sniper. She was born Karola Ruth Siegel on June 4, 1928, in Germany to a Jewish family. At the age of ten, she was sent to an orphanage in Switzerland for safety. Her parents were subsequently sent to concentration camps by the Gestapo and killed. Westheimer was not allowed to take classes at the local school because she was a girl. However, a fellow orphan boy would sneak her his textbooks at night so she could read them in secret and continue her education.
Westheimer studied psychology at the University of Paris then she got an M.A. degree in sociology from The New School in 1959. She got her doctorate from Teachers College, Columbia University. She started her television show Good Sex! With Dr. Ruth Westheimer in 1984. She went on several talk shows and spoke about sex which was considered taboo.
Dr. Ruth has written over 45 books about sex and her life has been an inspiration for books and movies.
Dr. Ruth is very much alive and still lives in the cluttered three-bedroom apartment on 190th Street in Washington Heights where she raised her two children.
