Devin Landgraf Obituary, Death – In the company of her family, Janet Block, 86, of Lake City, Iowa, died away quietly on Wednesday, May 18, 2022, at Stewart Memorial Community Hospital. On April 1, 1936, Janet Ann was born at her grandfather Robert Leith’s farm close to Ware, Iowa, to parents Murl and Marjorie (Ralle) Leith. She was raised in Ware with her family until the age of twelve, at which point they relocated to a farm a mile north of Ware.
She went to elementary school and completed her high school education in Ware in 1954. Jan pursued more education after graduating, attending Buena Vista College and the University of Northern Iowa, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in education. Jan was married to Richard James Block in Ware, Iowa on June 16, 1957. Barb, Bob, and Jean were the three children born into this partnership.
Over her life, Jan played a variety of roles, including those of a teacher, mother, housewife, grandmother, farmhand, and friend. She worked as a teacher for many years before retiring in May 1991. Her profession was something she genuinely loved—teaching and engaging with students. Jan had a lot of interests and was constantly on the go. She loved to sew, read, tell stories, cook, mow, garden, and be outside in any weather.
She cherished the lake life and the warm weather. She enjoyed traveling, and she and Rich cherished several winters in the bright Florida sun. Jan might be seen delivering meals to the fields, tending to the cattle, and assisting Rich on the farm during harvest. Janet had a deep faith in God. She had been attending Lake City Union Church for a long time and was quite involved in all facets of the church.
She cherished Lake City and anything related to enhancing or maintaining the town’s well-being. She participated in a number of clubs over the years and was an active community advocate. Jan looked forward to getting coffee at Sweet Things with some very dear friends. Above all, Jan loved her family. She enjoyed playing games with the younger children and went to all the sporting events.
Her grandchildren will always remember the games, stories, and excursions Grandma took them on. Grandma she was the greatest ever! Jan was a loving mother, friend, teacher, great-grandmother, grandmother, and mother-in-law. We shall really miss her.
