Trejo was born to Mexican-American parents, Delores Rivera King and Dionisio “Dan” Trejo. He has a maternal half-sister, Dyhan.
Trejo’s father frequently mistreated him. Trejo and his family briefly resided in San Antonio, Texas, shortly after he was born; they had to leave Los Angeles because Dionisio was wanted by police for stabbing another guy.
They moved back to Los Angeles after a year, where Trejo’s father surrendered. In 1949, Trejo and his cousins shared a room at their grandmother’s house.
Trejo began taking drugs at ages 8, 12, and 18, respectively, including marijuana, heroin, and cocaine. All three were introduced to Trejo by his uncle Gilbert, who also caused him to overdose on his first heroin fix.
He believes he didn’t face racism growing up because he lived in the diverse Pacoima district of Los Angeles after moving there when he was 13 years old. Years later, he bought his childhood house and frequently stayed there.
Trejo’s cinematic career began in 1985 when he unintentionally ended up as a boxer for a day rate of $320 in the independent American film Runaway Train.

His memory is honored with the song “Danny Trejo” by the Mexican alternative rock group Plastilina Mosh, which can be found on their album All U Need Is Mosh.
The Fear by Charlie Higson makes reference to Trejo. In the book Prison Ramen: Recipes and Stories from Behind Bars, he contributed.
Additionally, Edward Bunker refers to him as the Rona Barrett of San Quentin in his prison memoirs Education of a Felon, also known as Mr. Blue in England, because Danny was always up on the latest rumors.
Trejo’s Tacos: Recipes and Stories from L.A. is a cookbook he released in 2020 that includes both recipes and autobiographical tales.
Together with his lifelong buddy Donal Logue, Trejo co-wrote the autobiography Trejo: My Life of Crime, Redemption, and Hollywood, which was released in 2021.
