It’s still so wild to think that Angela Bassett lost the Oscar last year to… Jamie Lee Curtis in Everything Everywhere All At Once. It’s even wilder to realize that before last night, Bassett had never received an Oscar throughout her entire career. At last night’s Governors Awards, Bassett finally received an honorary Oscar for her body of work. Bassett was one of four honorees at the Governors Awards, which is untelevised yet well-attended. The other honorees were Mel Brooks, Carol Littleton (a legendary film editor) and Michelle Satter (founder of the Sundance Institute). Satter won the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.

Angela Bassett wore this beautiful Dolce & Gabbana strapless gown. I cannot believe this woman is 65 years old!! Her husband Courtney B. Vance was there, and their two children came out as well to see their mom receive her Oscar. In what I’m sure was a tearful moment, Angela’s friend Regina King was the one to present the award. In her speech, Bassett paid tribute to the ten Black women who won competitive acting Oscars (Regina King included).

“Nunca permita que o medo, a frustração e o desapontamento atrapalhem as bençãos que são divinamente e merecidamente suas”, disse Angela Bassett ao vencer o Oscar honorário pelo impacto de sua carreira. 🧡✊🏽 pic.twitter.com/el6CesKmIe
