10 Things You Didnt Know about Towanda Braxton

If you’re a fan of R&B, Braxton is probably a name that you’ve become pretty familiar with. Throughout the 90s, Toni Braxton was one of the biggest names in R&B music, and still remains one of the highest-selling solo artists of all-time. However, as you probably already know, Toni isn’t the only talented member of the Braxton family. With the success of the family’s reality TV show,  Braxton Family Values, fans have been able to see the entire family in a new light, and it looks like they’re all some pretty talented individuals. But with that being said, all of the siblings haven’t always gotten equal time in the spotlight.  Well, now it looks like another one of Toni’s younger siblings may be on the rise. Here are 10 things you didn’t know about Towanda Braxton.

She was a member of The Braxtons

During the late 80s/early 90s, the Braxton sisters formed a group called The Braxtons. The group featured all five sisters, and their first single, “Good Life” was released in 1990. The group never gained commercial success, but the single did help launch Toni’s legendary solo career. Towanda is one of only three sisters who has been in the group the entire time.

She has an open marriage

For most people, marriage is a sacred bond that can only exist between two people. However, Towanda and her husband, Andre Carter, have decided to take a different approach. According to Towanda, the couple has a very unique situation, and during an interview she stated, “We have an open and front door situation.” Hey, whatever floats your boat!

She’s been singing since childhood

Although Towanda’s music career never really took off, singing has been a part of her life since she was just a child. Growing up in a religious family that considered singing an important tool for worship, Towanda has always been around people who love to sing and listen to music. In fact, she claims that she has been singing since the age of five.

She is “the responsible one”

In most families, the oldest child is usually the most responsible, but that isn’t the case with the Braxtons. Apparently, those who know Towanda often refer to her as “the responsible one,” and if you’ve ever seen Braxton Family Values and/or know anything about some of her other siblings, it’s clear to see why Towanda holds that title.

She is a Zeta

Like her sister Toni, Towanda also attended Bowie State University. While there, Towanda pledged as a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. The nearly 100-year-old sorority is part of the Divine 9 and focuses on service and commitment to others. According to the group’s mission statement, “”The purpose of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority is to
foster the ideas of sisterhood, service, charity, civil and cultural endeavors,  scholarship and finer womanhood. These ideals are reflected in the sorority’s national program for which its members and auxiliary groups provide voluntary service to staff, community outreach programs, fund scholarships, support organized charities, and promote legislation for social and civic change.”

She started a business venture

Towanda Braxton may be a reality TV star now, but she isn’t just putting all of her eggs in one basket. She’s also started her own business, The Secret Squirrel, which is a school/training program for people who want to be professional personal assistants. According to Towanda, “Toni would always compare her assistants to me and I would end up training her new assistants. I was very good at being a personal assistant, so I decided I should create a school that develops top-notch personal and executive assistants. We made a call out for applicants earlier this year and the response was huge; but we are being very selective.”

She is the middle sister

Although there are six Braxton children in total, out of the five Braxton girls, Towanda is the middle child, and she seems to be working hard to not be the stereotypical child in the middle. Although she has often had to live in her siblings’ shadows, she definitely seems to be the most level headed and least dramatic of the bunch.

Singing isn’t her real passion

With years of singing experience under her belt, and two sisters who have found successful solo career, you’d assume that Towanda always wanted to be a singer as well. However, that just isn’t the case. She actually cites acting as her real passion, and hopes that eventually she can have a career in the acting world.

She’s a ‘go with the flow’ type of person

Some people believe that Towanda could have had a more successful career if she had been more vocal about what she wanted and hadn’t had to live in her sister Toni’s spotlight. While Towanda won’t say whether she agrees or disagrees, she did say that she had always been the type of person who went with the flow, and she kind of put everyone else’s wants and needs before her own. Now; however, she seems like she’s really focused on doing what she thinks is best for her.

She doesn’t always like her sisters

As with any family, the Braxtons definitely have their ups and downs. With six kids in one family, you can imagine that things were pretty hectic growing up, and even now the siblings definitely have their moments. During an interview, Towanda even said that while she loves her sisters, she doesn’t always like them.
